Nez Perce Peak (11,901')

This peak, with the exception of Shadow Peak, marks the end of what is actually the long east ridge of the South Teton.  Nez Perce is a prominent sight from Jenny Lake, where its outline in the early years of the park suggested to some the name "Howling Dog."  The official name comes directly from the Nez Perce tribe of Native Americans who hunted in the region near the Teton Range.  Nez Perce consists of five peaks - East Peak, East Summit, main summit, West Summit, and West Peak.  The northwest side of the peak is the only side that offers easy access to the main summit.  The view from the summit is one of the better ones in the park, showing not only the Cathedral Group but also the peaks to the south.

It is worth noting that the Northwest Couloirs route causes some climbers problems, as the easiest line through the 4th class terrain is difficult to find, especially on descent.  Pay close attention when ascending this route so that you can avoid descending into unnecessarily steep terrain on your way down.
