Open Canyon
Open Canyon is a relatively shallow canyon between Granite and Death Canyons on the east slope of the Teton Range. After joining the Valley Trail from the Death Canyon (Whitegrass Ranger Station) Trailhead, turn left and head over the Phelps Lake Overlook and down to a junction with the Death Canyon trail. A left turn here takes you to another junction with the trail that circumnavigates Phelps Lake. A right turn at this junction leads to the junction with the Open Canyon Trail.
From here the trail climbs rapidly up the lower slopes of Prospectors Mountain, then traverses into the canyon bottom. After crossing Open Canyon Creek. the trail switchbacks steeply up the south side of the canyon through Spruce-Fir forest to Mt. Hunt Divide (9,700'). Suitable campsites are limited in this steep canyon but it is one of the less-traveled in the Park.
