Paintbrush Divide (10,720')

Paintbrush Divide is the most famous difficult high pass in the Teton Range and has been the scene of many accidents over the years!  The upper reaches on the east (Paintbrush Canyon) side are guarded by very steep snow fields that have very short run outs into rocky talus.  When still snow covered, backpackers with heavy packs who slip and fall on this snow have no chance of arresting themselves without an ice axe and the knowledge to properly use it.  Once melted out this section is characterized by steep loose switchbacks that require a bit of "scrambling" to negotiate.

The west (Cascade Canyon) side of the divide is less steep and typically melts out quicker due to it's western aspect.

Treat this divide with the respect it deserves!
